Your warehouse in Commerce holds $2 million in electronics inventory. Your construction site off the 710 just had its third break-in this month. Your jewelry store sits on a busy stretch of Hill Street in Downtown LA where foot traffic is high and so is risk. These are situations where a visible uniform and a clipboard aren’t enough. You need armed security guards who are licensed by the state, insured for your protection, and trained to handle the specific threats your property faces.
We are Scaife Protection Services — a licensed Private Patrol Operator (PPO-12958) providing armed security guard services across Los Angeles since 1997. Every armed officer we deploy carries a valid BSIS firearms permit, has passed background checks and psychological screening, and operates under a custom post order written for your property. We don’t quote armed security over the phone. We walk your property first, assess the actual risk, and then place the right officer for the job.
Armed security is serious. We treat it that way.

When You Actually Need Armed Security
Not every property needs an armed security guard. We tell people that upfront because honesty matters more than upselling. Armed security exists for situations where the threat level, asset value, or response-time gap justifies having a firearm-qualified officer on site. If your situation doesn’t meet that threshold, unarmed security is the smarter choice — and we’ll tell you so.
Here are the scenarios where armed security guards in Los Angeles make sense:
High-value inventory. Warehouses and distribution centers storing electronics, pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, or anything with significant resale value. If what’s behind your walls is worth six or seven figures, the people trying to take it know that too. An armed guard changes their calculation.
Cash-heavy businesses. Check-cashing stores, jewelry retailers, pawn shops, and dispensaries all handle large amounts of cash or high-value merchandise on the sales floor. The visibility of an armed officer is itself a deterrent.
Construction sites with expensive equipment. A single piece of heavy equipment can be worth $200,000+. Sites in remote or industrial areas with long police response times are especially vulnerable. Armed security provides real-time protection when law enforcement is 20 minutes away.
High-profile individuals and estates. Personal protection for executives, public figures, and estate properties in Beverly Hills, Palos Verdes, or Bel Air where the threat profile is elevated.
Remote properties with slow emergency response. Any location where police response time exceeds 10–15 minutes. In parts of unincorporated LA County and the Central Valley, that’s the reality. An armed guard fills that gap.
On the other hand, if you manage a medical office lobby, a shopping center entrance, or a mid-rise residential building, unarmed security is almost always the right call. The presence of a firearm in those environments creates more liability than it solves. We’ll walk your property and give you an honest assessment — not a sales pitch.

What Our Armed Security Guards Are Trained To Do
An armed security guard is not just “someone with a gun.” That thinking gets people hurt. Every armed officer we deploy through Scaife Protection has completed training that goes well beyond basic firearms qualification. This is what sets a professional armed security officer apart from a liability waiting to happen.
BSIS Firearms Certification. Every armed guard holds a valid BSIS-issued firearms permit, which requires completion of an approved firearms training course, a live-fire qualification exam, and passing scores on both written and practical assessments. This is renewed annually — no exceptions.
De-escalation Training. The best outcome in any confrontation is one where no weapon is drawn. Our armed guards are trained extensively in verbal de-escalation techniques — how to calm a situation, how to redirect aggressive behavior, and how to control a scene through communication before force ever becomes a factor.
Use-of-Force Continuum. Our officers understand the escalating levels of response: verbal commands, physical presence, hands-on control, less-lethal options, and finally, lethal force as an absolute last resort. They know exactly when each level is appropriate under California law and when it is not.
Threat Assessment. Armed guards are trained to read an environment — identifying suspicious behavior, evaluating potential threats before they escalate, and positioning themselves strategically on your property. This is proactive security, not reactive.
Emergency Protocols. From active-shooter response to medical emergencies to fire evacuation, our armed officers know the protocols. They coordinate with law enforcement when needed and understand their legal authority — and its limits — under California Penal Code.
Legal Authority and Limitations. An armed security guard in California is not a police officer. Our guards understand this clearly. They know what they can and cannot do legally: they can detain under certain conditions (citizen’s arrest), they can defend themselves and others with proportional force, and they must comply with all state and local firearms regulations. We train for accountability, not aggression.
California Armed Security Guard Requirements
California has some of the strictest armed security guard regulations in the country. That’s a good thing. It means the armed officer standing at your property has been vetted, tested, and certified by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Here’s what the law requires before someone can work as an armed security guard in California:
BSIS Guard Card. Every security guard — armed or unarmed — must first hold a valid BSIS Guard Card. This requires completing the Power to Arrest training course (8 hours) and passing a criminal background check through the California Department of Justice and FBI.
BSIS Firearms Permit. On top of the Guard Card, armed guards must obtain a separate Firearms Permit. This involves completing a BSIS-approved firearms training course (minimum 14 hours of classroom and range instruction), passing a written exam, and qualifying on the range with the specific firearm they will carry.
Psychological Evaluation. California requires a psychological screening for armed security guard applicants. This evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist and is designed to identify individuals who may be unfit to carry a firearm in a professional security role.
Drug Testing. Pre-employment drug screening is standard practice and often a condition of the employing company’s insurance policy.
Firearm Registration. Each firearm an armed guard carries must be registered with BSIS and associated with their employer’s PPO license. Guards cannot carry personal firearms on duty — only registered, company-approved weapons.
Annual Re-qualification. Armed guards in California must re-qualify on the firearms range every year and complete continuing education to maintain their permit. At Scaife Protection, we track every certification date and ensure no officer is ever deployed with a lapsed qualification.
If a company can’t tell you their PPO license number, their guards’ firearms permit status, or their re-qualification schedule — that’s not a company you should trust with armed security. Ours is PPO-12958. You can verify it here.

Armed Security for Specific Industries in Los Angeles
Different properties face different threats. The armed guard protecting a warehouse in Vernon has a completely different post order than the one at a jewelry store in the Arts District or an estate in Palos Verdes. Here’s how we approach armed security across the industries we serve most in Greater Los Angeles.
Warehouses & Distribution Centers
The warehouse and logistics corridors along City of Industry, Commerce, Vernon, and the Alameda Corridor are high-target zones for organized theft. We deploy armed guards at distribution centers storing pharmaceuticals, electronics, fashion goods, and automotive parts — properties where a single load can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Our armed officers cover perimeter security, gate access control, truck yard monitoring, and after-hours lockdown. Every post order is written for your specific layout, shift schedule, and loading dock operations.

Construction Sites
Construction site theft costs the industry billions annually, and Los Angeles is no exception. Remote sites along the Santa Clarita corridor, industrial zones in South LA, and sprawling developments in the Inland Empire are particularly vulnerable — especially on weekends and holidays when no crews are present. Armed security guards deter copper wire theft, heavy equipment theft, and material pilferage. We focus on after-hours patrols, access point control, and rapid incident response for sites where police response time can stretch past 15 minutes.

Retail & High-Value Businesses
Jewelry stores in the Downtown LA Jewelry District, electronics retailers along major commercial corridors, and licensed cannabis dispensaries throughout Los Angeles all handle high-value inventory on the sales floor. Armed security in these environments serves a dual purpose: visible deterrence to potential robbers and rapid response if an incident occurs. Our armed guards in retail settings are trained in customer-facing de-escalation — they are professional and approachable while maintaining a clear security presence.
Financial Institutions & Cash Transport
Banks, credit unions, check-cashing facilities, and businesses that handle large cash deposits require armed security as a standard operating practice. Our armed officers provide lobby security, cash-in-transit escort support, and branch protection for financial institutions across Los Angeles County. These placements require guards with clean records, financial-sector experience, and the temperament to handle high-stress environments calmly.
Hospitals & Healthcare Facilities
Emergency rooms, behavioral health units, and standalone urgent care facilities face a unique set of security threats — aggressive patients, drug-seeking behavior, custody disputes, domestic violence spillovers, and late-night ER traffic that can turn volatile fast. Some healthcare facilities in Los Angeles require armed security, particularly standalone ERs and behavioral health units where the risk of workplace violence is highest. Our armed officers in healthcare settings understand OSHA workplace violence prevention requirements and the Joint Commission’s security standards. They are trained to de-escalate in environments where patients and families are already under stress — and to intervene decisively when a situation crosses the line from tense to dangerous.

Estate & Residential Properties
High-net-worth residential properties in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Palos Verdes Estates, Malibu, and the Hollywood Hills often require armed security for personal protection, estate perimeter security, and event coverage. We provide discreet armed officers who understand the expectations of private residential clients — professionalism, discretion, and the ability to manage access without creating an oppressive atmosphere. Whether it’s a long-term estate posting or temporary coverage during a high-profile event, our armed guards are matched to the environment.
Armed vs. Unarmed — Making the Right Call
This is the most common question we get, and we’re going to give you a straight answer. Armed security guards cost approximately 50–60% more than unarmed guards. That’s a significant premium, and it should only be paid when the risk justifies it.
Choose armed when your property stores high-value assets, handles large amounts of cash, faces credible threats of violent crime, or is located in an area where police response time is slow. Armed security is about matching the deterrent to the threat.
Choose unarmed when your primary need is access control, customer-facing presence, patrol and observation, or general deterrence at retail, medical, or office properties. Unarmed guards are less expensive, create lower liability exposure, and are appropriate for the vast majority of commercial security needs.
Liability matters. An armed placement increases your insurance requirements and creates additional legal exposure. Every armed interaction carries more weight — legally, financially, and in terms of public perception. That’s not a reason to avoid armed security when it’s needed. It’s a reason to work with a company that takes it seriously and carries the insurance to back it up.
We carry $1 million+ in general liability coverage specifically because we deploy armed officers. Not every security company in Los Angeles can say that. Ask yours.

How We Deploy Armed Guards
Armed placements get extra attention at every step. Here is our process from first call to boots on the ground:
1. Risk Assessment. We start with a conversation about your property, your concerns, and the incidents that brought you here. This helps us determine whether armed security is the right fit before we invest time on both sides.
2. Site Walk. An owner or senior supervisor walks your property in person. We look at access points, sight lines, lighting, neighboring properties, and any environmental factors that affect security. No armed guard gets deployed to a site we haven’t physically visited.
3. Custom Post Order. We write a detailed post order specific to your property — patrol routes, response protocols, communication procedures, escalation steps, and reporting requirements. This is the operating manual for your guard.
4. Guard Selection. Not every armed guard is right for every site. We match experience, temperament, and skill set to your property type. A warehouse posting in Vernon requires a different profile than an estate in Beverly Hills.
5. Deployment. We can deploy armed guards the same day for emergencies. Standard placements are typically operational within 24–48 hours after the site walk and post order are complete.
6. Ongoing Supervision. Armed placements receive more frequent field supervision than unarmed posts. Our supervisors conduct unannounced site checks, review incident reports, and verify that the post order is being followed. This is non-negotiable.

Frequently Asked Questions About Armed Security in Los Angeles
How much do armed security guards cost in Los Angeles?
Armed security guard rates in Los Angeles typically range from $32 to $48+ per hour depending on the assignment type, hours, duration of the contract, and specific requirements. Armed guards cost approximately 50–60% more than unarmed guards due to the additional licensing, training, insurance, and oversight required. For an accurate quote based on your property, use our Build-a-Guard tool or call (323) 786-8140.
What license does an armed security guard need in California?
In California, an armed security guard must hold two credentials issued by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS): a Guard Card and a separate Firearms Permit. The Guard Card requires completion of the Power to Arrest course and a background check. The Firearms Permit requires an additional 14+ hours of firearms training, a live-fire qualification, a psychological evaluation, and annual re-qualification. The guard must also work for a licensed Private Patrol Operator (PPO) and carry only registered, company-approved firearms.
Can armed security guards make arrests?
Armed security guards in California can perform a citizen’s arrest under Penal Code Section 837, which allows any person to arrest another when a felony has been committed in their presence or when they have reasonable cause to believe the person committed a felony. However, security guards are not peace officers. They do not have the same legal authority as police. Our guards are trained to detain and contact law enforcement rather than attempt arrests in ambiguous situations. The priority is always safety and legal compliance.
What is the difference between armed security and police?
Police officers are sworn law enforcement with full arrest powers, the authority to conduct investigations, and legal protections under California law. Armed security guards are private citizens employed by a PPO-licensed company. They can observe, report, deter, and detain under limited circumstances, but they cannot conduct searches, issue citations, or exercise the broad authority that police hold. Armed security fills the gap between “call 911 and wait” and “have someone trained and present right now.” The two work together — not as replacements for each other.
Do your armed guards carry concealed or exposed?
It depends on the assignment and client preference. Most of our armed guard placements use exposed carry (holstered and visible) because the visible presence of a firearm is itself a deterrent. For residential estate work, executive protection, and certain client-facing environments, we offer concealed carry options where the guard is armed but the firearm is not visible. We discuss this during the site walk and recommend the approach that best fits your property, your threat profile, and the impression you want to make on employees, customers, or residents.
How quickly can you deploy an armed guard?
For emergencies, we can deploy an armed security guard the same day — often within a few hours of your call. We maintain a roster of pre-vetted, BSIS firearms-certified officers ready to go across Los Angeles County. For standard placements, we prefer to complete a site walk and post order first, which typically means deployment within 24–48 hours. If you need someone now, call us directly at (323) 786-8140.
Do you provide armed security for hospitals and healthcare facilities?
Yes. We deploy armed security officers at hospitals, emergency rooms, behavioral health facilities, and medical campuses across Los Angeles. Healthcare security requires officers who understand OSHA workplace violence prevention standards and can de-escalate in high-stress medical environments. Our armed guards in healthcare settings are trained to handle aggressive patients, custody disputes, and ER disturbances while maintaining a professional presence that does not add to the stress of patients and families.
